Stefano Sollecito granted bail, Leonardo Rizzuto denied

Stefano Sollecito
Montreal Mafia leader Stefano Sollecito was granted bail Wednesday after a Superior Court judge agreed he cannot adequately be treated for the cancer he is suffering from inside a provincial detention centre. Sollecito was unable to attend the funeral held for his father, Rocco, at a church in Montreal this month. The elder Sollecito, a longtime leader in the Montreal Mafia, was shot dead in Laval in May.

Leonardo Rizzuto, 47, the son of deceased Mob boss Vito Rizzuto, will remain behind bars while he awaits a trial. Both men were arrested in November along with more than 40 others. They are charged with taking part in a conspiracy to traffic in drugs between Jan. 1, 2013, and Nov. 16, 2015. They are also charged with committing a crime “for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with, a criminal organization.”

The case returns to court for a preliminary inquiry in October.
