Ali Awada murdered in Montreal

The 28-year-old man murdered Friday night in Montreal-North is Ali Awada. He is the son of Mohamed Awada, killed in the fall of 2012, in a series of murders that preceded the return of Mafia godfather Vito Rizzuto to Montreal after a six-year detention in the United States for his involvement in the killings of three lieutenants of the Bonanno clan in New York in 1981.

Ali Awada was arrested in June 2014 in the first round of the RCMP's Clemenza investigation of the Montreal mafia.

In Clemenza, Awada was charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement and conspiracy to commit two arson attacks. It's possible that his murder is part of the internal conflicts that have shaken the Montreal mafia for a decade.

The Awadas were known as being related to the late leader of the Rivière-des-Prairies clan, Giuseppe De Vito, who was murdered with cyanide in his cell in the Donnacona Penitentiary in the summer of 2013, and the Vittorio Mirarchi clan of Raynald Desjardins.
