2 Durham cops among 5 charged in drug investigation - Update

Two Durham Regional Police officers and three civilians have been arrested after a year-long investigation into an Ajax bar.

Police began investigating the Black Bear Pub and Grill during the summer of 2016 because of “excess alcohol serving and illegal drug transactions” The investigation found that cocaine and pot were being sold at the bar.

Const. Husen Aswat is facing seven counts of breach of trust, four counts of trafficking in cocaine, three weapons offences, possession of the proceeds of crime, and one count each of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Const. Amandeep Thakur has been charged with two counts of breach of trust, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime. Both men have been suspended without pay.

Others charged are Rajalingam Varatharjan , 44, Kevin Chung, 34, and Shaun Carter, 40 who face a variety of drug trafficking and possession charges.
