Ex-wife of HA Damiano Dipopolo loses YVR security clearance - Repost

Janette Yuen Shan Wu (Jan Wu-Dipopolo) lost her appeal for a security clearance allowing access to restricted areas at the Vancouver International Airport. The Federal Court of Canada’s chief justice ruled the government has the right “to err on the side of public safety.”

Wu split with her husband, Damiano Dipopolo, in 2006. Two years later she started work with Airport Terminal Services. She received the required airport security clearance. In 2015, the RCMP warned Transport Canada of Wu’s circumstances.
They said Dipopolo had a “gang affiliation” and has eight criminal charges: two for assault, one for assault with a weapon, another for assault causing bodily harm, three for uttering threats and one for drug possession. He has threatened Wu repeatedly. Damiano Dipopolo has not been convicted of a crime.

Wu’s security clearance was yanked and she lost her job because she “may be prone or induced to commit an act, or to assist or abet an individual to commit an act, that may unlawfully interfere with civil aviation.” She appealed the decision to the Federal Court, complaining the government didn’t take into account that her only contact with Dipopolo was court-ordered — a judge granted joint custody of their two children.
The court’s chief justice ruled that “the security of the travelling public” trumps a person’s employment and "access to the restricted area of an airport is a privilege, not a right."

The ruling stated " ... he (Dipopolo) will continue to have regular and ongoing opportunities to intimidate her and to attempt to induce her in the manner described”

Wu may appeal the decision.
