Carfentanil was developed to tranquilize large animals like elephants. It is extremely potent, 100 times stronger than fentanyl. A nearly microscopic amount of carfentanil can be deadly. To increase profits, carfentanil is being mixed with other drugs or pressed into pills that look like prescription painkillers. The DEA recently issued an alert after an increased presence of carfentanil in the illicit drug market was detected. Treating a carfentanil overdose is extremely difficult. Naloxone isn't effective against carfentanil in normal doses. Even multiple, high doses of naloxone may not be enough.
